EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT SERVICES

  • Addiction can involve substances, behaviours, or activities that negatively impact daily life, relationships, and wellbeing. At Advantage Psychology, our clinicians provide evidence-based treatment to help individuals understand the underlying factors driving addictive behaviours and develop strategies to regain control over their lives.

We use approaches supported by research, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). These therapies focus on identifying triggers, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, building coping strategies, and supporting behavioural change. We also address co-occurring issues such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, which can influence addictive behaviours.

Our goal is to empower clients to achieve lasting recovery, improve wellbeing, and rebuild meaningful connections in their personal and professional lives. Through structured, evidence-based care, we provide a supportive environment where individuals can safely explore challenges, develop practical skills, and work toward sustainable change.

  • At Advantage Psychology, we provide evidence-based ADHD treatment that is tailored to each client’s unique needs. Research consistently shows that the most effective approach to managing ADHD combines structured psychological therapy, practical skills training, and, in some cases, medication prescribed by a GP or psychiatrist. Psychological support can help individuals better understand their ADHD, develop strategies to manage symptoms, and improve daily functioning at home, work, or school.

One of the most effective therapies for ADHD is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which focuses on building skills for organisation, time management, problem solving, and reducing procrastination. Therapy may also include mindfulness-based techniques to improve attention and emotional regulation, as well as strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and low mood that often occur alongside ADHD. For adults, therapy can also provide support with workplace challenges, study skills, and relationships. Parents of children with ADHD may benefit from structured parent coaching and behaviour management strategies, helping families create more consistent and supportive routines.

Evidence-based treatment also means a focus on the whole person, not just the symptoms. Our psychologists work collaboratively with GPs, psychiatrists, schools, and families to ensure each individual has wraparound support. By combining practical strategies, education, and tailored therapy, we help clients with ADHD harness their strengths, build confidence, and thrive in everyday life.

  • Adjustment Disorder can occur after experiences such as relationship changes, job loss, relocation, health diagnoses, or other major life stressors. While feelings of stress, sadness, or worry are normal, sometimes these reactions become overwhelming and interfere with daily life. Evidence shows that with the right support, most people recover well and can build greater resilience for the future.

The most effective therapies for Adjustment Disorder are talk-based, evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These therapies help clients process difficult experiences, manage anxious or depressive symptoms, and develop healthier coping strategies. Treatment often focuses on building emotional regulation skills, reducing stress, and finding new ways to adapt to life changes. For many people, therapy also provides a safe, supportive space to explore meaning, values, and pathways forward after a challenging transition.

Our psychologists take a holistic and person-centred approach, working collaboratively with clients to tailor strategies to their specific needs and circumstances. We also liaise with GPs, workplaces, and families where appropriate to ensure integrated care. With structured, evidence-based treatment, people experiencing Adjustment Disorder can regain balance, strengthen resilience, and move through life’s changes with greater confidence and wellbeing.

  • While anger is a normal human emotion, it can sometimes become overwhelming, leading to conflict in relationships, problems at work, or even impacts on physical and mental health. Research shows that with the right psychological strategies, people can learn to regulate anger, respond more calmly, and improve their wellbeing and relationships.

Effective therapies for anger management include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps clients recognise unhelpful thought patterns and develop more constructive responses. Other evidence-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness-Based strategies support clients to build emotional awareness, develop coping skills, and reduce the intensity and frequency of angry outbursts. Treatment often focuses on stress management, communication skills, and problem-solving, helping people to handle challenging situations with greater balance and control.

Our psychologists take a supportive, non-judgmental approach, tailoring therapy to each person’s unique triggers, history, and goals. Where helpful, we also work with families, partners, or workplaces to support positive change across different areas of life. With evidence-based anger management strategies, clients can strengthen relationships, improve emotional wellbeing, and respond to life’s challenges with greater confidence and calm.

  • At Advantage Psychology, we provide evidence-based treatment for anxiety, supporting individuals who experience persistent worry, fear, or tension that interferes with daily life. Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions, and while occasional stress is part of being human, ongoing anxiety can feel overwhelming and difficult to control. The good news is that anxiety is highly treatable, and research shows that psychological therapy is one of the most effective ways to reduce symptoms and regain balance.

The most effective treatments for anxiety include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps people identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns, and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is especially effective for phobias and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Other approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness-Based therapies are also shown to reduce worry, improve coping, and build resilience. Therapy often focuses on learning practical strategies for calming the body, managing racing thoughts, and approaching situations with greater confidence.

Our psychologists take a warm, client-centred approach, tailoring treatment to your individual needs and goals. We also collaborate with GPs and psychiatrists if medication or broader health support is part of your care plan. With the right tools and support, people living with anxiety can experience significant relief, develop healthier coping strategies, and move forward with more confidence and calm.

  • At Advantage Psychology, we provide evidence-based treatment and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as their families and carers. Every person with autism has their own strengths, challenges, and goals, and our role is to provide tailored support that helps individuals thrive in daily life.

Evidence-based therapies for autism include Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) strategies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) adapted for autism, and social skills training. For children, therapy may focus on communication, managing emotions, building independence, and navigating school or peer relationships. For adolescents and adults, support often includes managing anxiety, developing life skills, strengthening social connections, and achieving goals in education or employment. Parent and family support is also an important part of treatment, helping families create consistent routines and strategies at home.

Our psychologists take a strengths-based, neurodiversity-affirming approach — recognising and celebrating each individual’s abilities while providing practical tools for areas that feel more challenging. We work closely with GPs, schools, and other allied health professionals to ensure integrated, wraparound care. With evidence-based autism support, individuals and families can build skills, confidence, and resilience, while creating meaningful pathways for the future.

While living with Bipolar Disorder can feel overwhelming at times, research shows that with the right treatment and support, individuals can achieve stability and lead fulfilling, meaningful lives.

Psychological therapies play an important role in managing Bipolar Disorder alongside medical care. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help clients recognise mood changes early and develop effective coping strategies. Psychoeducation supports individuals and families to better understand the condition, while Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) helps stabilise daily routines, sleep patterns, and lifestyle factors that influence mood. Therapy often focuses on building resilience, managing stress, improving relationships, and supporting medication adherence in collaboration with treating GPs and psychiatrists.

Our psychologists provide a warm, collaborative, and non-judgmental environment, tailoring treatment to each individual’s unique needs and goals. We also work closely with healthcare providers and families to ensure a comprehensive approach to care. With evidence-based treatment for Bipolar Disorder, individuals can gain greater control over their symptoms, improve quality of life, and move forward with confidence and stability.

  • At Advantage Psychology, we provide evidence-based treatment for behavioural difficulties in children, adolescents, and adults. Behavioural challenges can include frequent outbursts, defiance, difficulties following rules, aggression, or struggles with self-control. These behaviours often cause stress at home, school, or work, and can place strain on relationships. The good news is that research shows with the right support, individuals can learn new ways of coping and behaviour can improve significantly over time.

The most effective therapies for behavioural difficulties include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help individuals recognise triggers and develop healthier responses, and parent management training to support families in creating consistent routines and strategies. Other evidence-based approaches, such as social skills training, emotion regulation strategies, and positive behaviour support, can also help reduce challenging behaviours and strengthen communication. For younger children, therapy often includes play-based approaches and parent involvement to reinforce progress outside of sessions.

Our psychologists work collaboratively with families, schools, and other professionals to ensure consistent, wraparound support. We take a strengths-based, practical approach that focuses not only on reducing difficult behaviours but also on building resilience, confidence, and positive relationships. At Advantage Psychology, we provide evidence-based relationship counselling using the Gottman Method, a research-backed approach shown to improve relationship satisfaction and connection.

Our clinicians use the Gottman Method, which focuses on enhancing communication, building trust, and managing conflict constructively. Through structured sessions, couples learn practical skills to strengthen friendship, deepen emotional intimacy, and navigate disagreements without escalation. We also explore underlying patterns that may impact the relationship, helping couples develop strategies for long-term resilience.

Our goal is to support couples in creating a positive, fulfilling relationship. By combining assessment, skill-building, and ongoing support, we help partners reconnect, communicate more effectively, and cultivate lasting emotional connection.

Couples Counselling framework is set up as follows:

    1. One 50-minute couples session to explore your relationship history, current challenges, and shared goals.

    2. Two online relationship assessments (~60 minutes each), completed individually at home. These assessments provide a detailed picture of your relationship strengths and areas for growth.

    3. Two individual 50-minute sessions (one per partner) to go through assessment results, while giving each person the space to share their perspective.

    4. One final 50-minute couples session to review the findings, agree on a plan, and outline your pathway forward using evidence-based strategies.

Following this assessment phase, your counsellor will recommend a tailored therapy plan based on your needs and goals as a couple.
