Couples counselling

Make your love last

Build a stronger connection with your partner

At Advantage Psychology, we understand that relationships can be both deeply rewarding and deeply challenging. Many couples find themselves stuck in cycles of conflict, distance, or stress, unsure how to move forward. That’s where the Gottman Method can help.

Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the Gottman Method is one of the most researched and evidence-based approaches to couples therapy in the world. Based on over 40 years of scientific research with thousands of couples, this approach has identified the behaviours that make relationships succeed — and the patterns that cause them to break down.

Unlike generic counselling, the Gottman Method offers couples specific, research-based tools that can be applied immediately in everyday life. It is practical, effective, and focused on long-term relationship health — not just short-term fixes.

Our relationship counsellors, including those trained in the Gottman Method, create a safe, respectful, and non-judgmental space for couples to work on what matters most. Whether you’re struggling with ongoing conflict, recovering from a setback, or simply wanting to strengthen your bond, this approach offers a clear pathway forward.

Appointments are available online, making it easier to fit support into your lives or for couples to dial in separately.

How it Works

The Gottman Method helps couples to:

  • Improve communication and truly listen to each other

  • Reduce conflict and manage disagreements in healthy ways

  • Rebuild trust and emotional connection

  • Strengthen friendship, intimacy, and shared meaning

  • Develop practical tools they can continue to use outside therapy

Therapy begins with a structured assessment process to ensure your counsellor fully understands your relationship dynamics before starting treatment.

The Relationship Assessment Framework - what you can expect in session.

  1. One 50-minute couples session to explore your relationship history, current challenges, and shared goals.

  2. Two online relationship assessments (~60 minutes each), completed individually at home. These assessments provide a detailed picture of your relationship strengths and areas for growth.

  3. Two individual 50-minute sessions (one per partner) to go through assessment results, while giving each person the space to share their perspective.

  4. One final 50-minute couples session to review the findings, agree on a plan, and outline your pathway forward using evidence-based strategies.

Following this assessment phase, your counsellor will recommend a tailored therapy plan based on your needs and goals as a couple.
